It’s refreshing reading about two driven young women relying on each other as they try to figure their lives and themselves out. In a world where YA narratives love to paint a picture of their main characters finding true love their senior year of high school I was grateful to find their stories far more true to the reality I have seen, dating jerks, and being far to compensating to their jerk behavior. I love the perspective and voice Dunn and Raskin give to their characters, driven young women, struggling with mental health, and the drastic instability of your early twenties. Gen is struggling to find a queer scene in her new town, and hopes to get her editor to let her write stories of substance. Ava continues to struggle making new friends, due to her anxiety, and doesn’t know how to make a good enough impression on the show’s star to truly break into the industry.
